Lanta Old Town on the east coast was the island’s main port long before the west-coast beaches existed — a row of wooden stilt houses over the water, some of them now cafés and guesthouses.

South of it, Mu Ko Lanta National Park occupies the tip of the island, with a lighthouse on the headland, a short jungle trail, and a resident troop of macaques around the car park.

Not a boat trip, but the best half-day you can spend on land here, and an easy add-on to an afternoon mangrove trip.
