Questions

Frequently asked questions

Twenty things people ask before booking. If yours is not here, message us on WhatsApp — we would rather answer a blunt question now than have you find out on the boat.

Do I need to know how to swim?

No. Every guest wears a life jacket in the water and we carry float rings, and a guide stays with anyone who is not confident. Tell us when you book so we can plan for it. The one exception is the Emerald Cave swim, which needs you to be comfortable in deep water and in the dark for a few minutes — you can skip it and stay on the boat.

Is snorkeling gear included?

Yes. Mask, snorkel, fins and a life jacket are included on every snorkeling trip. If you have your own mask you are welcome to bring it — a mask that already fits your face is always better than one that does not.

What is the national park fee and why is it not included?

Mu Ko Lanta National Park charges foreign visitors THB 400 per adult and THB 200 per child, collected on the day in cash at the island. It is a government fee that goes to the park, not to us, which is why every operator on Lanta quotes excluding it.

Do you pick up from my hotel?

Yes, anywhere on Koh Lanta Yai, included in the price. Pickup times on each trip page assume the central west coast; if you are staying in the far south we will collect you 20 to 30 minutes earlier.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We cancel and refund in full, or move you to another day if you would rather. We make that call in the morning based on the actual sea state. We would rather refund you than take you out in conditions that are not safe.

Can I bring young children?

Yes, and plenty do. The mangrove and Monkey Point trip is the easiest with small children — calm water, shade, no swimming needed. For snorkeling trips, ask for a child-sized mask when you book; an adult mask on a small face leaks and ruins the day.

How many people are on the boat?

It depends on the trip and it is listed on every trip page. Longtail trips run to a maximum of 12 to 20 depending on the boat, speedboat trips up to 25 to 30. If you want a smaller group, a private charter is priced per boat rather than per person.

Is lunch included?

On the full-day trips, yes — a Thai lunch or a beach buffet, plus fruit, water and soft drinks. Half-day trips include snacks, fruit and drinks but not a full lunch. Tell us about allergies and dietary requirements when you book and we will handle it.

Can you cater for vegetarians, vegans or allergies?

Yes, with notice. Let us know when you book rather than on the morning — the food is prepared ashore and we cannot change it once we have sailed.

How do I pay, and do you take cards?

Message us and we will confirm the payment options for your booking in writing before you commit. Bring Thai baht in cash for the national park fee — that is collected on the island and there is no card machine on a national park beach.

What is your cancellation policy?

If we cancel for weather or sea state you get a full refund, or a free move to another day — that part is never in question. For cancellations by you, we confirm the terms in writing when we accept your booking, so you know where you stand before you pay anything.

Do you run trips in low season?

Some of them. From June to September the south-west monsoon brings swell to the west coast and the national park normally closes for part of it, which takes Koh Rok off the table. Sheltered trips — the mangroves, the east coast, often Koh Haa — usually keep running. Message us for what is going out this week.

Will I see turtles?

Often, not always. Green turtles feed regularly around Koh Chueak and are seen on most trips there, and they turn up at Koh Rok and Koh Haa too. Nobody can promise wild animals, and any operator who does is selling you something they do not control.

Can I feed the monkeys?

No, and we ask guests not to bring food ashore where the troops are. Feeding makes wild macaques aggressive and dependent, and it ends badly for the animals. You will still get close enough for good photographs.

What should I bring?

A rash vest, reef-safe mineral sunscreen, a towel, a dry bag for your phone, cash in baht for the park fee, and motion sickness tablets if you are prone to it. Leave your passport at the hotel — a photo on your phone is enough.

Is sunscreen restricted?

Yes. Sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or butylparaben are banned in Thai marine national parks and it is enforced. Bring a non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen, or better, a long-sleeved rash vest.

Do you take large groups or private events?

Yes. A private longtail takes up to 10 and a private speedboat up to 20, and we can run several boats together for bigger groups, weddings and company trips. Tell us the numbers and the date and we will quote it properly.

I get seasick. Which trip should I take?

A longtail is gentler than a speedboat because it is slower, and the closer islands mean shorter crossings. The mangrove trip is on flat inland water and is the safest choice of all. Take your tablets 45 minutes before departure, not once you are feeling it.

Do you offer transfers to Krabi, Phuket or the other islands?

Yes — private car and minivan transfers to Krabi Town, Krabi Airport, Phuket, Ao Nang and the ferry piers, plus speedboat transfers to Phi Phi and the nearby islands. See the Services page.

How far in advance should I book?

In high season, particularly December to February, a few days ahead for join trips and a week or more for private charters. In quieter months the day before is usually fine. Message us and we will tell you honestly what is left.

Planning your Koh Lanta trip?

Scooters, island trips and airport transfers, all from one local team. Tell us what you need and we will sort it.
